Antique Chinese Furniture
Pieces in our Antique Chinese collection date back as far as the early 1800s. Each piece is recovered from rural provinces in China, such as Shanxi and Guangi, and restored to its former beauty and glory. The furniture reflects the way people lived, how they interacted with their environment and with each other. Crafted from solid Chinese elm, a feature of Chinese furniture is its sophisticated and ingenious joinery.
Julia and Rob, the owners of Shack in Sydney together with Helena, our stylist, regularly travel throughout China hand-selecting the finest range of oriental antique furniture for our customers back in Sydney. In order to preserve the original condition and appearance, mortise and tenon techniques are employed in the repair of all furniture, paint is used to maintain its primitive simplicity, and stains which developed during the process of use are removed.
Special attention is paid to the preservation of the original colour of the oriental homeware and furniture so as to restore its original brightness and gracefulness. Finally, a coating of clear lacquer is applied on the surface. All processes are completed by hand. The delicate carving displays motifs that are highly symbolic reflecting aspirations and beliefs of an earlier time that continues to resonate today. Each piece is uniquely beautiful and our collection changes constantly based on what can be recovered.
